Realism in Murals

I love building murals that add great architectural detail to a blank facade.  In french, it’s called Trompe L’Oeil (to trick the eye).  Don’t get me wrong, regular murals are good too, but the artists that try to tie the mural into the building always impress me.

Growing up in St. Louis, every time we drove by this building I was fascinated:

It’s now the Sheraton Hotel.  The mural covers three sides of the building.

When I lived in Pittsburgh, I saw the one below on Penn Avenue:

There are 3 or 4 houses in a row that the mural continues on with, adding a bride running up the stairs.

Now I’m in Trenton and here is another one:

This depicts the reading of the declaration of independence.  The view through a painted arch into history is nice, but I really like the two contemporary guys painted in the foreground looking in.

So I started looking at other cool murals and found these:

That last one makes me feel like I was on a roller coaster too many times!

Have you seen some cool building themed murals you want to share?  Let me know in the comments.

I have not seen any murals as cool as this though the new mural on 129 that the Trenton Mural Arts project did is nice. But these murals are so unexpected and I think that is what makes them cool. I really love the boat one and the one that looks like a hole is being ripped out of the side of the building!

There is one in Charleston, WV of several Victorian houses and I had to get up close to see that it was a mural, not actual houses. I like the wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey ones!

Love the ship one! I’ve been to all those places before by the way but I’ve never seen any of these :( Next time I head to St. Louis for a business trip I will check that hotel out.

These are awesome, I think when it’s done tastefully murals can look great, especially in the urban environment.

I must say that these were Master pieces, a state-of-the-art murals. Too few people can create an art like these. What I love about them is their quality of being realistic. The last one created an illusion to me. Fantastic!
